Effects Of Climate Change On Our Food
We usually relate climate change with the gradual and drastic changes in the environment due to the increasing temperature. But not many people are aware of the fact that climate change can also affect your favorite food that you consume frequently. The situation wherein you can’t find your favorite foods at the supermarkets or grocery stores is a scary one. We will look at some of the food items that are at risk of getting endangered due to the changes in climate patterns.
- Peanuts: Those who are fans of peanut butter and other peanut-based products are at the risk of missing it. For the cultivation of peanuts, one requires to grow it in an area that has a good water supply and good exposure to sunlight. It is difficult for a crop to grow as needs a consistent length of warm weather and about 30 inches of rain. If any of these factors vary, then there is a chance that the peanuts won’t germinate. With increasing unpredictability in weather patterns, it has become a tough job to grow peanut crops.
- Chocolate: Chocolate finds its base ingredient from the cacao or cocoa trees. These trees are mainly situated in Ghana and Indonesia. These trees require a warm temperature and a good amount of humidity to thrive. With the changes in the climate, these Cacao tree growing regions are experiencing an increase in temperature and a decrease in rainfall, which in turn reduces the levels of humidity. This can lead to a deterioration in the amounts of cocoa produced.
- Coffee: Many people consume coffee as an early morning drink. The coffee plantations grow in areas with a cool temperature of about 20 degrees C. With a gradual rise in the temperatures and an increase in rainfall, the coffee plantations are at risk of being endangered. Even a small change in temperature can change the taste of the coffee seeds.
