The Eiffel Tower is the biggest attraction in Paris with over 300 million tourists having visited the iconic tower. It is considered one of the most beautiful monuments in the whole world. It is called the La Tour Eiffel in French and is a dominating figure in the skyline of Paris. It was built in the year 1889 and is 986 ft tall. It is considered as an engineering marvel due to its massive height and also the time and age in which it was built. In this article we will look at some of the facts related to the Eiffel Tower which makes it so special.

  • It was not meant to be a permanent structure: The Eiffel Tower was unveiled at the World Fair in 1889 and was a sign of the prowess of the Engineers who built it. It was fitted with antennas and radio transmitters at the top and was only meant to be in use for 20 years, after which it would be demolished. Later on it was thought that the Tower was way to precious and useful to be demolished and was kept intact.
  • It contains a secret apartment at the top: At the time of designing the Tower, Gustave Eiffel decided to make an apartment for himself at the top of the Eiffel Tower. He used it for entertaining guests over there and also used it as his private space. It is now accessible for the public.
  • Hitler wanted the Tower to be destroyed: At the time of the second world war, France and Germany were engaged in a bitter tussle. When Germany occupied France, and they were about to lose control of the city to the Allied Forces, Hitler had ordered his soldiers to destroy the tower but this was not implemented as the Military Governor couldn’t follow the command.
  • It is the most visited paid tourist attraction in the world: The Eiffel Tower enjoys the popularity of the tourists as it garners over 6 million tourists every year which is the highest as compared to others and tops the list of the most visited paid tourist attraction.
