SAG Awards 2019 – Black Panther wins for Best Movie Ensemble
“Will & Grace” star Megan Mullally will deliver the laughs on Sunday as host of the 25th Annual SAG awards, which honors the top actors across film and television.
SAG Awards ambassador Harry Shum Jr. (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), that are both nominees this year, will announce that the honorees for outstanding actions performances by film and TV stunt ensembles throughout the official pre-show.
To celebrate the silver anniversary of the award show, stars will walk a silver carpet. People, Entertainment Weekly, and TNT will live-stream the red carpet across societal media starting at 2:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. ET. Additionally, it will be accessible on PeopleTV, sagawards.org, and also the jumbotron at New York City’s Times Square.
The yearly actors-telling-everyone-how-they-became-actors opening kicks off with Mike Myers talking about filling out a Canadian vocational test at 17 and the authorities deciding he should be “a movie star.” Geoffrey Owens mentions his famous stint at Trader Joe’s “to determine if I could hang in there with my profession and it is actually worked out pretty nicely,” he quips, also hosts Megan Mullally jokes she has been operating since 1942.
Mullally riffs on Hollywood diversity: “They cast black people in ‘Black Panther,’ that was great. Folks in ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’ There’s a green book in ‘Green Book.’ You know there was some executive saying, ‘Can the book be whitened?'” If the laughs are few, she says, “Not my favorite joke.”
“Well, I will be. I didn’t think I would have to talk,” says celebrity Chadwick Boseman, pointing out his fellow castmates because of their “passion and intellect and solve.” In addition, he cites the movie’s effect on Hollywood: “To be young, gifted and black, so we all know what it’s like to be informed there is no screen or point to be featured. We all know what it’s like to be not over and underneath. … We knew we had something we can give the world”
