WORLD OZONE DAY
INTRODUCTION
Do you know about the ozone layer and what is its importance and function in the world? How it is beneficial for us? Do you know what is World Ozone Day? Do you know when and why it is celebrated every year and what is its theme for this year? If your answer is no, then donβt worry as I am going to discuss βWorld Ozone Dayβ in the below-mentioned context.
ABOUT THE TOPIC
The ozone layer is a part of the atmosphere that has a high concentration of ozone. Ozone is a gas that is made up of three oxygen atoms i.e. O3. Depending on the location of the ozone layer on the earth, it can either harm or protect life on earth. Most of the ozone is present within the stratosphere due to which it can act as a shield that protects the earth from the ultraviolet radiation of the sun. The absence or incapability of this shield makes all to be more susceptible to the impaired immune system, cataracts, and skin cancer.
World ozone day is celebrated every year on 16 September. It is celebrated to create awareness among people regarding the continued depletion of the ozone layer and to find solutions to resolve this problem. Life on earth would not be possible without sunlight. But the energy emerging from the sun is more than enough for the life on earth not for the ozone layer. Hence this stratospheric layer shields the earth from most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation. The ozone layer is also known as the Ozone shield due to its property of protecting the life on earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun by absorbing most of it.
HISTORY OF WORLD OZONE DAY
The United Nations General Assembly on 19 December 1994 has proclaimed September 16 as the International Day for the preservation of the ozone layer in the remembrance of the date in 1987 on which the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer was signed. Every year, 16 September is celebrated as the International Day for the preservation of the ozone layer. The purpose of the Montreal Protocol is to protect the ozone layer by reducing the production of substances responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer.
THEME OF WORLD OZONE DAY FOR 2020
βOzone for lifeβ is the slogan for World Ozone Day 2020. This year all have celebrated 35 years of global ozone layer protection.
βOzone for lifeβ reflects that not only is ozone crucial for life on earth but everyone also must continue to protect the ozone layer for future generations.
CONCLUSION
From the above, we can conclude that ozone is crucial for all lives on earth. So it is our responsibility to protect and preserve it for present and future generations.
