Huawei: A Global Force And A Suspected Spy
The 21st century is an era where technology, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, telecommunications, and electronic devices are the commodities that will be driving conflict on a global scale. Long gone is the time when conflict meant only military conflict. With the advancement of technology, cyber warfare poses more threat than a military ever could. And, the telecommunications companies are at the forefront of this. The country that dominates the telecommunication sector today will undoubtedly dominate a larger portion of tomorrow’s economy. Huawei is one such company that has the potential to dominate.
Starting as an electronic equipment design company, Huawei slowly but steadily expanded its reach. But since 2018, it has been accused of various unethical doings. From being the symbol of Chinese success to the embodiment of the worst fears of the modern world, the image of Huawei has taken a major hit.
Huawei was considered to be one of the great success stories of the 21st century but, since Donald Trump outlawed the US companies from doing business with the Chinese firm its revenue has suffered a major blow. There was a point when Huawei was only second to Samsung in the smartphone business. But now with serious allegations, people are starting to rethink their decision to buy their smartphones.
So, how did Huawei find itself involved in a new technological and geopolitical war?
Shenzhen, in southeastern China, is a modern metropolis that links Hong Kong to China’s mainland. This is where the majestic headquarters of Huawei is located. The complex spreads over a million and a half square meters, bigger than a theme park!
Starting just as an electronic design company now its activities reach much farther than the telecommunications sector. A 5G network, deep-sea cables, facial recognition cameras, and the cities of the future – It is weaving a new technological web that covers the whole world!
A new world punctuated by technology wars and devoured by geostrategic tensions. At the heart of these new stakes is an announced revolution an ultimate weapon developed by Huawei – 5G network. 5G promises to change our societies forever. A new world of connected objects, unmatched power, and speed of connections are some peculiar characteristics of the 5G network. The fifth generations of mobile communications are about to change our lives, for better or for worse! And this company has considerable control over this market.
When it comes to the wireless communications market, here too Huawei is amongst the leading company. In the 5G market, it is one of the four major suppliers of 5G technology, which is going to be an evolutionary change.
The stakes are incredibly high and Huawei knows it. Already being banned in quite a few countries Huawei is under tremendous pressure. In 2018, the Chinese tech giant was accused of espionage by Washington. Since then the tide has turned against the tech giant. No country has yet shown the trust in Huawei to establish a 5G network in their region. The so-called allies of China have also barred Huawei from entering their 5G market, rightly so as national security should be the topmost priority!
