The International Day Of Democracy

THE INTERNATIONAL DAY

INTRODUCTION

Do you have ever heard about the word “democracy”? If yes, then did you know what exactly democracy means? How is the democracy in the times of COVID-19? Did you know when and why the International day of democracy celebrated every year? If no, then don’t worry as I am going to discuss the “International day of democracy”.

ABOUT THE TOPIC

Democracy is a process act as a goal and with the full participation and support of the international community, national governing bodies, civil societies, and individuals can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, staying anywhere. The values of freedom, respect for human rights, and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are some of the essential elements of democracy. Democracy provides us with the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights.

DEMOCRACY DURING THE TIMES OF COVID-19 OUTBREAK

As the world confronts COVID-19, democracy is crucial in ensuring the free flow of information, the participation of people in decision making, and accountability for the responses towards this pandemic. In these times, governments need to be transparent, responsive, and accountable in their COVID-19 responses and should ensure that any emergency measures taken must be legal, proportionate, necessary, and non-discriminatory. The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in major social, political, and legal challenges that the whole world is dealing with for many months. Since states around the world adopt emergency measures to resolve the crisis, it is critical for them that they should continue to uphold the rule of law, protect and respect international standards and basic principles of legality, and right to access justice, remedies, and due process.

The international day of democracy is a day that provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world which is being observed by all UN member states on 15 September every year. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has resolved to observe 15 September as the International day of democracy in the year 2007, to uphold and promote the principles of democracy.

THEME OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DEMOCRACY, 2020

The theme for democracy was participation in the year 2019. But in 2020, the international day of democracy is an opportunity to recall that democracy is about people.

CONCLUSION

From the above, we can conclude that democracy is built on inclusion, equal treatment, and participation, and it is a fundamental building block for peace, sustainable development, and human rights. We have to try to maintain the state of democracy in these pandemic situations too.
