ABOUT THE TOPIC

Television is a mass medium that provides entertainment, news, gossips, etc. It is a medium used for transferring moving images in two or three dimensions and also for the transfer of sound. It is considered to be a healthy source of education as well as entertainment. It plays a crucial role in society as it acts as a medium to transfer or providing the most valuable information to a large number of people together. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a huge increase in television viewership because more and more people spend their time watching TV. Social distancing and work from home have changed people’s life, now people are spending their time with their families, having food together, and watching their favorite show or movie or sports together. Therefore, it greatly acts as a source for family bonding and entertainment at home.

History

The U.N. organized the first World Television forum in the year 1996 on 21 and 22 November. It provides a large platform and allows the media to discuss the importance of TV in delivering information all across the world and how has TV changed the whole world and how it has contributed towards the development of the world. It is considered the largest single source of video consumption. Hence, UN General Assembly on 17 December 1996 through resolution 51/205 has established the date of 21 November as World Television Day to show respect and mark the date on which World Television Forum was organized.

The main objective of this day is to highlight the daily importance of television in communication and globalization.
